FAQ

Q: Do I need to be an expert rider to take an Urban AdvenTour?
A: We welcome riders of all levels. It is important to remember, however, that many of our tours are conducted on both recreational trails and city streets. For this reason, it is imperative that you are able to stay alert in traffic. Your tour guide will be an experienced rider who will help keep you safe on your trip. A custom tour is always available for riders with less experience or for riders who want to build their confidence biking in traffic. Our Tour de Boston is also a good choice for folks who want to minimize time spent in traffic.

Q: Is Urban AdvenTours a bike shop?
A: Yes. In 2010 Urban AdvenTours opened a full service retail bike shop a few doors over from our tour and rental headquarters in Boston’s North End. Visit us at 103 and 109 Atlantic Avenue! We carry bikes from Kona, Giant, Masi, Surly, Biria, and All-City, along with a wide array of parts and accessories to keep you on the road safely.

Q: Can I order a gift certificate?
A: Absolutely! You can purchase gift certificates for our tour and rental offerings online

A: We do have guides who are fluent in Italian, French and Spanish. Please email us at least 48 hours in advance to book the appropriate tour guide. Please understand that guides may not be available on every day.

Q: What is included in a tour?
A: We provide every rider with a safe, expertly fitted, comfortable bicycle and helmet. Water is also included to keep you hydrated. We provide a friendly, fun-loving Urban AdvenTours Guide whose mission is to make your tour of Boston a truly unforgettable one.

Q: I just saw this big green mail truck with your name on it. What is that thing?
A: That’s the Bio Bus! It’s our bike delivery machine that runs on biodiesel and delivers bikes to hotels, residencies, and colleges around Boston and the surrounding area.

Q: What should I bring on a tour?
A: You should wear comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear (sneakers are best). Please remember to bring your e-ticket if you booked your tour in advance. Because it is important to stay well hydrated, we will provide water to all riders, but feel free to bring extra water or sports drinks. Be sure to have eaten so that you’re well fueled for the ride.

Q: What is Urban AdvenTours’ commitment to safety?
A: All of Urban AdvenTours’ bikes are top of the line, well maintained, expertly fitted and safe. We provide each rider with a helmet as well. Moreover, Urban AdvenTours is a fully insured company. Your safety and comfort are of the utmost importance to us. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes prior to departure time in order to have your bike and helmet fitted by one of our experienced tour guides. All bikes and helmets are fully outfitted with reflectors and reflective strips. Lights are available for those who will be riding at night.

Q: How long are the tours?
A: Tours generally last between 2 and 3 hours and cover 10-12 miles, but this varies by tour. For specific times, see tour descriptions here to learn more about each individual tour.

Q: Can I customize a tour?
A: Certainly! Check out our Private Tours page and then Contact us via email with your request. Urban AdvenTours will be happy to adjust a tour to your riding level, time constraints or specific points of interest. Rates vary dependent on the tour and the size of the party.

Q: What is your Refund Policy?
A:Tickets are non-refundable, but may be rescheduled based on availability. Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded because your space has been guaranteed at the event.
The activity may be cancelled due to severe weather. The activity usually runs in light rain and other moderate weather conditions, but we may cancel the activity up to an hour before the start time in the event of severe or unsafe weather conditions. If we cancel the event, ticket-holders will be allowed to reschedule tickets (subject to availability) or receive credit for a future event.

Q: Do you donate tours to charity events?
A: Of course! Urban AdvenTours gift certificates make wonderful prizes for silent auctions, raffles, and other charity events. Please email us your request.

Q: How do I get there? Where is Urban AdvenTours?
A: Urban AdvenTours’ tour and rental heaquarters is located at 103 Atlantic Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts. Our bike shop is located a few doors down at 109 Atlantic Avenue. We are accessible by a variety of methods including public transit, walking, and of course, biking. Take a look at the map and directions here. Please plan your route before heading out to Urban AdvenTours. We cannot give turn by turn directions over the phone.

Q: What is a typical Urban AdvenTours experience?
All of our classic tours will start at our location at 103 Atlantic Avenue. There, you will check in, meet your tour guide, and get fitted with a bicycle and helmet. You will have a chance to test ride your bike to ensure a proper fit and then we’ll get you on your way exploring Boston! Sights and stops vary depending on which tour you have selected, but most tours stop about every 3/4 of a mile to a mile at historical sites or cultural landmarks, where the guide will tell you about the stop and give you some time to take photos.

Q: I have a young/small child, can they come too?
Absolutely! For children, we offer trailer bikes that easily attach to the parent/guardian’s bicycle, or child-sized bikes for a perfect fit. Check out our stock here to learn more. Due to limited numbers of some of this equipment, we suggest you call us to reserve it in advance.

Q: I took a tour a year ago, has anything changed?
A: There’s always something new happening with Urban AdvenTours! Just this last year, we opened a new showroom and classroom space, and expanded our rental fleet to over 150 bikes.
In addition, we’re always improving our tours based on customer feedback, and each tour guide adds their own touch and personality to the tours. Check out our tour offerings to see what new tours we’ve lined up for this year.

Q: Should I tip my tour guide?
A: This one is entirely up to you. If you had a great experience, a tip is a thoughtful, direct way of showing your gratitude. We like to think that if our guides took extra care of you, you’ll take extra care of them.

Q: What is the Urban AdvenTours philosophy?
A: We believe strongly that those who choose the bicycle as a mode of transportation are expressing a healthful commitment to themselves, their bodies and their environment. We at Urban AdvenTours fully support this commitment. Whether you call Boston your home or you are exploring the city for the first time, we want you to experience this amazing city via two-wheel power. Discover Boston’s many neighborhoods more thoroughly than exploring by foot, more intimately than touring by Trolley or Duck. Rest assured when you dine at one of Boston’s fine restaurants, you’ll have earned dessert.

Q: Will I have to sign a waiver when I attend an Urban AdvenTours event?
A: Yes, all guests must sign a waiver and release form. You can download it here and fill it out before you arrive to save time.
