Reviews of UA Bikes from those who know them best

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Our Tour guides spend and awful lot of time on our bikes. From running errands, commuting, and of course giving tours on them our guides know these bikes from the saddle to the pedals. They’ve served us well and we’re now making them available for purchase. Come check one out, get the specs and take it for a test ride. Here’s the inside scoop on the Specialized Globe Vienna from our guide Pell:

A Smooth Ride; A Great Ride!

I’ve been riding a Specialized Globe bike for three years: it’s been the smoothest ride of my life!

I can’t recommend the Globe highly enough! Its solid, strong construction, its excellent gearing, shift response, and powerful brakes make a person wonder why he or she rode anything else!

Urban AdvenTours is selling some excellent, tried and true Globes, which have been used for the past season.

You might think, Why would I invest in a rental bike? For this reason: UA treats its rentals like brand-new vehicles, carefully maintaining, adjusting and tweaking them after almost every trip. In short, UA’s Globe bicycles are beautifully functioning, well-oiled veterans, and well worth an investment if you’re looking for a great deal and a solid ride.

Come ride with UA! It’s fun, it’s educational, and it’s like no other trip through Boston! And come check out our fine line of used Globes, too!

Sincerely submitted,
Pell Osborn, tour guide

“Bike Week Open House Then Rollin’ Out” Events – May 19 & 20

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Boston Bike Week is just around the corner, and because we want everyone on two wheels to get out and enjoy the fun, Urban AdvenTours will be hosting our “Bike Week Open House and Rollin’ Out” events. We’ll be providing FREE, basic tune ups, introducing you to our new Show Room in the North End, and leading an evening bicycle tour of Boston.

Basic tune ups — which include checking tire pressure, tightening parts and lubricating components– will be from 5:00pm – 5:45pm. We’ll also have freebies from Bay State Bike Week to give out. This will be followed by a brief tour of our spaces and description of our programs. At 6:00pm, we will depart for the Bikes@Night tour. The tour will be an hour-and-fifteen-minute loop that will depart and finish at the shop. This is a great introduction for learning how to ride in the city!

You will need a bicycle in good working condition to attend the ride and helmets are required. Don’t have a bike? No worries. Bicycles are available to rent from the shop; we just ask you schedule one in advance to ensure you’ve got a ride!

Did we mention this event is FREE and open to the public?! Urban AdvenTours is located on Atlantic Ave in the Mercantile Mall building with a Show Room at 109 Atlantic Ave and Headquarters at 103 Atlantic Ave. For further information, contact the Urban AdvenTours shop by phone (617.670.0637) or email (info@urbanadventours.com).

Today’s Product Corner

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

With the addition of our Show Room at 109 Atlantic Ave. we’ve got lots of great new products in the shop. Here are some insider points and tips from the people who use the gear all the time, our staff!

Chris suggests: Chrome Citizen Buckle Bag

I’ve had a Chrome messenger bag for two years now and I am thoroughly pleased. Everyone first notices the seat belt buckle on the strap, but there is way more to the bag then that. Designed for cyclists, the strap and shape of the bag compliment your body’s form when cycling around town. The bag also has an inner rubber lining making it waterproof which is absolutely necessarily when you are riding around town with your laptop, clothes, books, rare baseball cards, Egyptian artifacts. These bags are made in the US and they are built tough. Mine has survived mud, snow, and falling out of my third story window. Go for the gold standard and get a Chrome.

Len’s Favorites: Surly Long Haul Trucker

Great bang for the buck! This is an excellent touring bike with a good quality chromoly frame/fork and components – XT hubs; 36 spoke hole rims. Great gear selection for hills and underload. Try it, you’ll like it….keep on truckin’ down the road ahead!

Shimano pedal combination PD – A530 – platform and SPD cleat

Very convenient if you ride alternately with cleated/non-cleated shoes. Whichever side you are using stay pointed to the sky. Just don’t try using both sides at the same time!

Park “Campagnolo” compatible chain tool CT-4.2

Their price cheap relative to the $200 masterwork offered by Campy. The real rub is component makers creating proprietary hardware that cannot be easily serviced in most areas of the planet!
