A Greener BioBus

We all go through changes in life. We start as the cute innocent youngster, we hit puberty and become angsty teenagers where we wear outrageous clothing our mother’s shake their heads at. Then we finally grow out of our attitudes and discover ourselves as mature adults who love bikes.

Our little BioBus during its "hippy-crunchy" phase, hanging out with Phil, the shop hog

Well, our little BioBus seems to be maturing in much the same way. The little tyke started out as a 1987 Postal delivery truck. Then went through its pubescent phase when it decided it didn’t want to be like all the other trucks and became a bit of a hippy, choosing recycled vegetable-oil over regular fuel. During this phase the bus also thought it looked good in white with a mess of images and crazy fonts all over it. And just like a mother, we loved it with all our hearts, regardless of what it dressed in.

But just as we traded in our bad haircuts for self-discovery, so too has our beloved BioBus. The makeover was a process. First we had  to paint the entire BioBus the signature Urban AdvenTours green. We’ve covered up the previous fonts and images, much like the removal of an ex’s name we thought would be a great idea to get tattooed when we were 18 years young.

Making it clean...

... and then mean and GREEN!

After that we recruited an artist, Dana Woulfe (you know, the cool mature role model) to stencil the new Urban AdvenTours logo on both sides of the truck and also ”I ‘bike’ Boston” on the back of the truck.

The bus looks a lot classier and will be even more visible when it is out and about. So keep your eyes peeled for the new and improved, one hunk of a stud, and even greener BioBus.

June Bug

The June bug has certainly bitten us, leaving us with a feverish need to be outside biking! And so far the first few days of June have delivered clear skies and plenty of sun to light up the roads and trails to keep us rolling.

To really kick-off the summer, the UA crew attended the 15th Annual Redbones Bike Party this past Monday night. Beer, Barbeque, and a whole lot of bikes in front of Redbones was a blast of an event. Tents spreading the word about their organization or shop included, ANT Bikes who provided the rad grand prize in the raffle of a custom cargo bike, NEMBA, Massbike, Geekhouse, Classico Cyclismo, Bikes-not-bombs, Hub Bike shop, Luna Chix, Pedros and of course we, Urban AdvenTours were giving out information as well.

Redbones Bike Party

The raffle prizes were endless, it took about an hour for all the prizes to be given out. A large portion of the prizes went to a couple who bought over a hundred tickets, but our very own UA member, Lauren won a gorgeous wool jersey by Earth, Wind and Rider. A few lucky ticket holders in the raffle won bikes by Redline, Giant and ANT.

Tuesday was the opening of another great event to keep the summer spirits high, and by that I mean one sugary high. For an entrance fee of $8, the Jimmy Fund’s Scooper Bowl in Government Center was giving out unlimited quantities of ice cream, sherbet, and gelato. The Scooper Bowl came in perfect timing for the little heat wave that has just hit Boston.

If you’ve decided to get ice cream all three days that the Scooper Bowl was opened, may we suggest you attend the Thursday night Urban AdvenTours and City Sports Ride Series? Meet us at our shop for 5:30pm and prepare to depart at 6pm for a 20-30 mile loop. The pace is athletic, but will not reach racing speeds. The loop ends at City Sports on Boylston Street.

And if Ben and Jerry are still taunting you, then head over to the Bikes not Bombs’ bike-a-thon and Green Roots Festival this Saturday. You have your choice of a 15 miler, 25 miler, or a 65 mile ride. Make sure you check out the Bikes not Bombs website for proper registration and departure times. After finishing your ride, then stick around the Stony Brook T stop, where the Green Roots festival and after party will be held. There will be music, games, food, and prizes, so if you don’t go because of looming Ben and Jerry, then go for the great cause the proceeds go towards.

That’s a lot for just the month of June. Stay tuned for even more upcoming bicycle events for next month. Parlez vous Francais? Anyone?

The 3 B’s of Life- Bikes, BBQ and Beer

Bike to Redbones Bike Party with the UA crew!

If you don’t know how to get to Redbones or you just love riding in bike gangs, then head over to our shop (109 Atlantic Ave) at 5pm and join the Urban AdvenTours crew who will ride out to Davis Square together. The first five cyclists to make it to Urban AdvenTours for the ride over to Redbones will win an “I ‘bike’ Somerville” t-shirt.
