Oh moving day

In last week’s transmission we discussed the oncoming deluge of students. Well another result of our city’s make up is the semi-holiday, Moving Day. September 1 is the start and end of so many Boston residents’ leases that the whole city seems to fill up with U-Hauls, boxes and packing tape.

With a change of address also comes a change of cycling commute. One of our UA crew members, Danielle is heading from Jamaica Plain to Somerville. She must bid adieu to the South West Corridor Path and the new bike lane on Columbus Ave. So long to the riders she passes every morning, the girl with the Bianchi, the guy who wears lots of orange.

Even little moves mean new starts, new bike neighbors. Boston is an ever-changing and evolving city and finding new routes is just part of what it takes to live here.

What’s your commute like? Favorite bridge over the Charles? Share your stories with us by leaving a comment, and good luck with your move!

Back to the books, still on the bikes

September is right around the corner now and I’m all for it. The crisp air, crunchy colorful leaves and the milder temperatures. September of course also means school will be back in session, which means that untold numbers of students will soon be descending on the Hub, aka Collegetown, USA.

My how we love those students. We’ve got Berklee, Northeastern, MIT, Emerson and of course Wesleyan alumni keeping the shop running. We’ve had a couple of these kids up at this past weekend’s Boston Greenfest too. Such antics, and dancing.

These are the kind of people we like to have here staffing Urban AdvenTours and we’re looking for more. Are you outgoing, environmentally conscious and a great writer? Do you love traveling and meeting people from all over the world? Most importantly, do you LOVE bikes? We’re looking for an intern who can help out a few times a week this fall semester. Everything from research, to managing social media, to helping out customers are on the list of projects for that lucky and ambitious student.

And did I mention that past interns have managed to land themselves a paid gig at AdvenTours? So send over your resume, or pass this post onto your friends. Ain’t matter what your major is, what school you attend, or whether you ride a beach cruiser or a carbon-fiber race machine. To tell us about yourself or ask questions you can send an email with your resume to jobs[at]urbanadventours[dot]com.

Who wouldn’t want to work with these goofballs?

Feeling awfully special

Specialized, the manufacturers of the fine tour and rental bikes that we offer, were in Boston for the past couple of days. The occasion was the launch of their new line of Globe bikes. We built out 32 gleaming new bikes, some taken right from the production line. These are our kind of bikes, made for city living with commuters in mind. There’s some convenient front racks on the Live models and the Haul is made for just that, moving some serious loads.

And the Roll, I have a big ‘ole bike crush on the Roll, with that sleek frame, the bright green… What a life we could have together the Roll and I, cruising down Boston’s streets. I mean just look at it.

So some of the crew led people from Specialized, local dealers and some members of the press on a great tour of Boston, a little bit different than our usual route. Grabbed some coffee first at Equal Exchange and the bikes just looked so at home in the city.

So a few familiar landmarks later and the ride ended at the Globe store-in-store, where they built out a display area for the bikes and explained all the specs and design behind the line. Looked pretty cool if you ask me.

Check out the whole set of photos here and come roll with us anytime.

Let’s get wicked EPIC.

No, we are not talking about heavy drinking. This weekend Boston hosts it’s only triathlon, the Urban Epic. Starting on Sunday, August 16 this monster of a race will have participants paddling a half mile, pedaling 10 miles, and pounding pavement for a final four miles.

The organizers of the race are also looking to make it one of the most sustainable, low impact events this city has ever seen. That’s something that we can get behind for sure. We’ve also got special road bike deals for participants.

We’ve got some pretty great stuff happening tomorrow too, but you’ll have to wait until later this week to hear about that. Just think about how you live to roll.

Eye of the tiger, err BioBus

We are feeling like champs in the shop down here in the North End. Conquering big tours, managing group rentals, putting on some serious events. We had a successful Tour de Farms last weekend with many miles, lots of sun, even more riders and some great information from local farmers.

The fifth annual Ride with the Champions, a cycling event to benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts, will be held Saturday, Aug. 29. The race is run from the Topsfield Fairgrounds and follows a great route along the North Shore, ending back at the fairgrounds with a post-race party. There are three different routes, ranging from a 62-mile Metric Century to a 12-mile Family Fun Ride. Of course, we’ve got bike rentals available if you don’t have your own ride. Skip the goofy carnival prizes and ride for a great cause. To be a champ yourself, check out their website or call 1-888-767-RACE and let ‘em know I sent ya.

It’s been a winning summer so far and we’re ready to power through into the fall. Now if only it was easier to bike up stairs….
